If you are curious about having something custom made in wood marquetry, getting an estimate is simple.
* First, you can email a photograph to me for evaluation. (You can also send a photo by regular mail)
* Next, I will email back an estimate of what it would cost to have it done.
The price of marquetry artwork is based primarily on the amount of detail in the photo.
More detail means more small pieces have to be cut, which means more labor and time, which brings up the price.
Here are some examples of how detail affects price:
In this picture, you can see the entire top of the boat where a lot of detail lies...

In this next picture, you can't see much of the top of the boat.
This eliminates a lot of complex detail and reduces the price.
Here are a few of my recent commission works next to the photos they were based on...
This is a good example of a boat that isn't very complex and has no scenery details... this piece would only cost around $1100
. . . .
Here is an example of a scene with several complex objects in abundant detail... this piece would cost around $3200
. . . .
When I give price quotes I usually break up the cost into several options for the client to choose from.
Here is an example of the choices that would be available for a picture like the one below...
To recreate the boat with only a shadow on the water instead of a reflection - $2000
To add the reflection - $200
To add the dock into the scene - $650
I also did this for 2 other photos that were sent to me.
That way, the client could choose exactly the type of picture he wanted while keeping his budget in mind.
He chose this one to be done, with all the bells and whistles, for $2850.
. . . .
There is only one way to know exaclty how much it would cost to recreate your favorite photo into marquetry...
Simply send in a few photos, and I will send back several price options for you to consider.
It is a quick and easy way to indulge your curiosity, and there is no obligation.

This next piece came about from a couple that walked into my booth at a classic boat show in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
He really liked my work, and they browsed around for quite a while before they left to check out the show.
Just before the show ended, she came back to my booth alone. She said that she wanted to get him something very special for Christmas...
She mentioned that she had a photo of his boyhood home and a photo of a 56 thunderbird his dad owned that he later inherited.
She asked if I could make a picture with the car parked in front of the house, and I said 'sure'.
He was very touched by the gift, and loved it, because of the sentimental value these things had to him.
The original photo of the thunderbird is off to the right.

This is a commission work of a lighthouse on Beaver Island Michigan
The lady who commmissioned it lived on Beaver Island for a decade or so, and wanted something that reminded her of the time she spent there.
She sent photos of this lighthouse, a tugboat that she owned while there, and a shot of the Beaver Island ferry.
After giving her all of her price options, she chose this one.

These are perpetual award plaques that I made for a Michigan boat show...They are about an inch and a half thick.
This is a commission for a 12 foot long mural that would be mounted on the outside of a home in Washington state.
The scene depicts the landscape view that the owner sees from his home.
It was made in 3 pieces and was mounted above a doorway as a false transom.

Here it is being installed...

This donor plaque was commissioned by the Grand Haven Library.
