\r\n How marquetry is done\r\n
\r\n
\r\n First, the concept for the marquetry artwork is decided on.\r\n

\r\n This is usually based on a photograph.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n \"A\r\n
\r\n
\r\n The next step is to create a line drawing based on the picture concept. During this process, elements can be added or removed to make the composition more interesting.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Before any cutting can take place, there is a lot of planning that needs to be done. Hours are spent picking which woods will be used to represent each individual piece in the artwork. Subtle tonal differences need to be achieved for areas where lighting in the picture varies.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Each individual piece is then cut out by hand and the pieces are fit together to form the complete image.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n \"Progress\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Once all of the pieces are cut and assembled, a backing board is covered in wood glue and the artwork assembly is bonded together. A press is used to ensure good a good, strong bond.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n \"An\r\n
\r\n
\r\n The surface of the bonded artwork is then scraped by hand with a cabinet scraper to level the surface and remove any glue squeeze.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n \"The\r\n
\r\n
\r\n The surface is then sanded from course to fine until it is perfectly level and smooth.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Next, a coat of sanding sealer (shellac) is applied. This soaks into the woodgrain and gives a good base for later coats of finish. The surface is sanded again with 220 grit and the finish coats are then applied. The final coats are usually lacquer, but can also be polyurethane or 2-part clear epoxy.\r\n

\r\n \r\n \"This\r\n \r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n I am a Michigan resident who creates pictoral art using wood. This unique artform is called marquetry (mar-ket-tree). It involves hand-cutting pieces of wood with different grain-patterns and colors shaped to resemble each element in the image. While the design phase is a free-flowing act of inspiration, the creation process is a meticulous and precise execution of skill.\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
\r\n Many exotic woods from around the world are used to get a good mix of colors and grain-patterns that can closely represent each element in the image. There are NO stains used in this tecnique, and all of the colors you see are the natural wood tones with a clear protective finish applied.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n With a background in both art and woodworking, marquetry seemed to be the most creative way of utilizing all of my talents. I am mostly self-taught, as there are few people in the United States that do this type of artwork. It has a very deep history and tradition in Europe, where I have received much advice and guidance in perfecting my art. I belong to both the Marquetry Society of England and the American Marquetry Society.\r\n
\r\n

\r\n
\r\n The uniqueness of this medium is a point of intrigue for those who wish to own something that is both beautiful and out of the ordinary. What I like most about working with wood lies in how the natural and exotic graiin-patterns can often look like other natural elements of a picture. I can create visual effects that would look flat and lifeless if it were a painting. Many woods have a texture and a luster that changes depending on the angle of light and the vantage point of the viewer. These interesting aspects of wood marquetry make make the creative process exciting for the artist and the finished result alluring to see.\r\n
